Care Wrapped in Love

Care Wrapped in Love

Care wrapped in love.

The focus on making certain the care Mom and Dad receive is not just a “service” is at the forefront of conversations I have with adult children. They seek more than a transaction – whether it’s taking medicine in the morning, going to appointments or assisting in a purchase.

Key Concerns

They want a loving touch, a warm smile and empathetic eyes supporting their aging parents. And, they want it for the full continuum of needs. The list of needs, long and diverse, generally coalesce under these categories:

  • Health: Adult children have concerns about their parents’ physical and mental health. How it might affect the parents’ quality of life? Are the proper evaluations made and the ongoing care of high quality?
  • Safety: As parents age, they generally become more vulnerable to accidents and falls, which can cause serious injuries. Safety for their parents’ safety at home and when they are out and about is paramount. What are the measures to reduce the risk of injury?
  • Finances: Aging parents could face financial challenges, such as reduced income or increased healthcare expenses. How do they make ends meet and sustain a comfortable lifestyle? How do the aging parents know the financial advice they are receiving is in their best interest.
  • Loneliness and Isolation: Many older adults experience loneliness and social isolation, which can have negative effects on their mental and physical health. A desire of adult children is to make certain their parents remain active, engaged and curious to ward off the effects of removing themselves from previous lifestyles.
  • Caregiving: As parents age, they require more help with daily activities, such as bathing, dressing, and meal preparation. Adult children are conflicted because they know their parents need care, but they have their own family needs. How can they provide quality time in support, and know the loving care is still being delivered?
  • End of life planning: Adult children want the final years, days and minutes for their parents to be positive and happy. But without being with them 100 percent of the time, how do they know this is happening? And, how will they deal with not having them around?

Peeking Through the Keyhole

While this list is not complete, it does give us a chance to peek through the keyhole and see what lurks behind the door. We are not oblivious to their needs, but the truth is we are at times oblivious to how we address them.

The University of Michigan Institute on Healthcare Policy and Innovation did a study and found that among adults ages 50 to 80, more than 88 percent believe it is important to age in place. The thought of moving from facility to facility, caregiver to caregiver and resident group to resident group is disconcerting. Click here for more on that study.
