Senior-Focused Groups have had a Positive Impact

A variety of senior-focused volunteer groups have had a positive impact.

Recently, the Elderly Care Concierge team engaged several such organizations, including the Dallas Area Parkinson’s Society and Dallas Area Gerontological Society, through conferences and trade shows. It offered us the opportunity to learn more about their programs and advocacy, and how our company can use them to improve our services.

Trade Show ExhibitingWith an aging population and the desire of seniors to maintain an independent lifestyle as long as possible, the role of companies such as Elderly Care Concierge are growing in demand. It behooves them and nonprofits to work together to benefit our elder constituents and their families.

Dallas Area Parkinson’s Society

The Dallas Area Parkinson Society is dedicated to impacting and improving the lives of those affected by Parkinson’s. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1978 by Clarice Dougherty to help her husband and others confront the daily challenges presented by Parkinson’s Disease (PD).  Thousands of lives have changed for the better because of Clarice’s mission and dedication of many others who have followed her.  DAPS serves as a pillar for Parkinson’s community by providing free education, speech and exercise classes, and support programs. Visit the society online here.

At its symposium in October, “Living Well with Parkinson’s Disease” the following topics were covered:

  • Understanding Parkinson’s Disease
  • Movement, Exercise and Fall Prevention
  • Deep Brain Stimulation – Learning About DBS and New Technology
  • Managing and Optimizing Sleep
  • Wellness for Care Partners
  • Apathy and Finding Meaning

More recently, we participated in the Dallas Area Gerontological Society Fall Forum which focused on “Acute Dementia Care in North Texas.” DAGS is a non-profit, voluntary member organization whose mission is to provide continuing education on gerontological topics, provide scholarships to individuals pursuing a career in the aging field, and to advocate for improved services for senior adults. These organizations exist to serve a greater good, but need financial support to sustain themselves. Elderly Care Concierge is a supporter and sponsor of several. We encourage you, especially companies with resources, to invest in nonprofits focused on senior issues.

Among the topics discussed were:

  • Panel Discussion on Ethics Case Studies
  • Medical Ethics in Geriatric Care
  • Housing & Care Options
  • Elder Financial Safety Tips
  • Geriatric Mental Health
  • Social Isolation and Loneliness in Later Life
  • Ethical Dementia Care and Research
